Once an amazing movie indeed and equally amazing were its songs. But the moment I heard them I was reminded of the song Blowers Daughter by Damien Rice. Randy Pausch

Haven't heard of this guy. I tell you in this world us being constantly browsing through the net, if we have somehow managed to miss this guy then we need to change our browsing style.

What a man...What a man this guy is. He is so much inspiring and praiseworthy that I fear that if I start telling about him I may not be able to say a trifle of things than what he deserves.

He was a professor, an academician and a person suffering from terminal pancreatic cancer. He died on July 25th 2008.

No don't feel sorry for him. He was a man who influenced so many lives before he died. He is different, something of a crusader in this world of plastic emotions, just a common man who knew how to approach his inevitable end. A man whose words are so simple but so real that it will render a shudder down your spines. His last lecture series is the lecture he gave before his death. If you haven't seen it then you are missing a kind of purifier, stainer of your life.

I cant say much but some journeys are meant to be taken to be able to understand how did the person who had already undertaken it feels. So i leave you with some links which will be help you in understanding why am I praising this guy so much (Of which I feel I haven't done enough).

Once



If you want a review of this movie then visiting this person's blog is a better option. My post is just express a feeling which I cannot even understand.

A beautiful movie especially for someone having musical ears. At the end of which you will be left with hordes of emotion each having equal significance. This is a movie which makes you feel happy, makes you feel sad, makes you feel dejected, makes you feel elated - all at the same time. Generally any movie can evoke emotions which are biased towards making you feel happy, sad, pumped up, exasperated or something else. This movie would leave you confused and when an emotion starts taking precedence over others you will hear yourself speaking "Hey, how can I feel that alone. The other things are also very significant".

With variant feeling its hard to categorize "Once" but one can be sure of that you will end up adoring and loving it. I am sure that the likeness would be compelling enough to recommend it to your friends.

"A must see" is all I can utter in the end.

Dash

Sometimes something is always there. One may never realize its presence but because of one's ignorance it does not mean it does not exist.

Todays discovery of mine was about a simple, harmless and friendly dash. Yes dash (-) is what I am talking about. Never thought this particular dash has a whole set of lineage and variety. Dash with a certain length means something, some other length dash denotes something else altogether. Hyphen, figure dash, em dash, en dash, horizontal bar, swung dash. Confused what am I talking about. My friends these all are form of dash

Was going through this post which is a degree above my discovery. My discovery is even more basic. Thanks to sids I have been enlightened.

Coke Studio

Recently this guy introduced me to some videos on you tube. They were from Coke Studio.

I was stunned by the performances and the voice quality. Anyhow I revere Pakistani Singer. Their voice is different- pure, fresh with a soofiyana touch. Simply and truly amazing. A simple example would be I'm in Love by Saba/Seline. Pretty unknown to me at least. Nevertheless once you listen to them it is worth visiting the 40-50 odd songs available on youtube/coke studio.

The music, the voices and everything in between is mesmerizing and heavenly. So browse and enjoy.

Old Skool, Pre Historic Skool or No Skool

Money, Recognition, Promotion a part and parcel of professional life. Whoooaaahhh I know I have made half of the readers nervous and half of you excited with anticipation. To the former I say well a taboo topic should get you edgy whereas to the later I apologize cause this post is going to be as boring as any other post of mine.

There was a discussion I had with one of my friends recently. The discussion was more so on the line over the seduction of higher pay package and disgruntlement an employee towards his/her employer. More so on the line when an employee is working his/her ass off to do various things in his/her work and the package does not correspond to current industry standards. Shouldn't him/her think about switching. Shouldn't he/her be disappointed with people putting lesser working time and getting equal or better packages. What is right thought process. What is the wrong thought process then. Is he/she wrong in thinking that he/she is worth more the value. More so is he/she wrong in thinking that his/her employer is being unfair in renumeration and recognition and question his/her treatment.

But as the way I am I had to have some crazy thought up my sleeves.There was a story which I had in mind and I reproduced in that discussion. The story goes like this."There was owner of a vineyard who needed people to work on his fields. He hired a few people in his vineyard on X amount of money daily. So there were workers in his vineyard toiling hard since morning in his fields. Some other needy workers also came to him to requested him for some kind of job. He being kind hearted also gave these new workers work and they started to work only after the afternoon. When the sun went down and time of payment came. He gave all his workers the same amount of money irrespective of the time they joined. This action of his resulted in resentment among the workers who worked very very hard for the whole day and got the same pay as the one who had worked only for a few and questioned their masters wisdom. To this the master replied that "Why do they question his wisdom. Haven't they been given what had been decided upon. If the goodness inside of me allows me to give from my own wealth the same to the ones who worked less then why should anyone grumble. What is yours will be yours but if I being the owner decide to give anything to other should not be a matter of jealousy for you. Its I who give""

Hmmmmmm...gulp gulp....I know a hard story to relate to....Or even digest...But within the small professional life, I have realized that its futile comparing and seeking what others are getting...How many times we may have done great job in our work but not received the same amount of recognition...How many times we may start believing that our work is niched and creative and thus deserves more credit...How many times we may think that working earnestly is not worth it at all...
To all these doubts I have only a thing to say. Is it not true that whatever position we are in we should do it to the best of our abilities irrespective of the working style of people around, irrespective of praising methodology of ones employer. Shouldn't doing the work in the BEST possible way be our aim always, irrespective of number of hours we may have to toil. I think not that grudgingly working is the right way, but earnestness is of utmost importance, its another thing that tomorrow we may go to some other place for the right reason but not grudgingly but willingly and happily that the time spend was worth it, after all. HAHAHAH as the title suggest this thought process does not belong to any school :)

Rock On !!!!



Couldn't agree more or couldn't disagree less with what has already written by this guy

But what to do as what I am and who I am, have to put in my own crappy take. And my take is more so dependent upon the ever random thoughts originating from planet Mars.

Go to a pub which plays rock, leave out the alcohol and ciggies and force people to sit in the chair, and thats "rock on" to me. No not in a bad way, but absolutely and whole heartedly along enjoyable line. Amazing movie with no great stand out performance as such, but how many Indian movies have rocking tune and songs and music because it should be there. Not many and I thoroughly enjoyed the music.

One tune which probably is not so famous or infamous among the multitudes of amazing songs in this movie is "Zehriley Saap". But I tell you after attending so many rock gigs and competitions its not so bad after all. Although lyrics may be a little on the funnier side but hey can you tell me does lyrics of System of Down has any meaning.

Not much to say which has already been said in millions of reviews already except that this movie did encourage some of friends to revive their forgotten love for strumming. So "ROCK ON" :)

Mr. Holland Opus ..... John Lennon

Mr Holland Opus a movie with a difference. A movie which created its own niche in the ever decreasing gray cells of mine. Effortlessly I recalled the scenes which I had seen on star movies almost 12-13 years ago. It gave me as much pleasure as it had given me during the very impressionable growing years of mine.

This movie is about a man Holland Opus who like any other wanted to make big in the music world. To support his cause he taught side by side. Thereafter it is about a journey of man from being any other human being to a loved teacher, and his eventual growing up with a deaf son. I remember how I almost got tears when Mr. Opus sings the song "Beautiful Boy" for his son. It still sends down a shiver down my spine when I imagine the whole rendition in my mind.

In one of the reviews of this movie in imdb someone wrote "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." : John Lennon and which is what happened to Mr. Opus. Such a beautiful and true thought indeed. In the hullabaloo of constantly moving towards an ever distant or a nearing destination we tend to forget the journey which will define us even when we are there at the final destination of our dreams. At the end we will only look back and reminiscence upon the foot prints of our life which in due course would have left an indelible mark in our hearts.

Indeed a brilliant movie which leaves you with a light heart.

On and off I attend Youth get together in the church I go to. One interesting thing was said by Moses (the person who generally leads the fellowship)

I do not remember whether he was quoting somebody.

The purpose of life is to study hard, finish schooling, finish college, get into good job, get married, have children and then cycle remains same for the children, children's children and so on.

The sermon in first person:

Jesus came preaching of his kingdom amidst roman empire. An empire which was a counter trend to the empires of the world. Jesus is teaching in a synagogue (a place of worship of the Jews).

Beth == House, Bethlehem == House of Gods, Synagogue == House of prayer

A woman is incapable of standing as she was crippled for the past 18 years. Although being weighed down by the deformity yet she came to the house of the Lord, glorifying God. Whether bent or straight her intention was to praise the Lord. We may ask ourself why should we go to the church. Imagine a football match between manchester united and chelsea without spectators. Church needs us and we need church. It is a place of assembly for praising God. Synagogue leader open the house of the Lord for prayer. He is responsible for the community thus a critical personality. Spiritual leadership is completely different from normal leadership. Spiritual leader is confident in God and knows God, seeks God well, is humble, a follower of God's example, serves God, loves God and is dependent of God.

God is calling us for spiritual leadership. God is looking for people who understand spiritual powers. Jesus says "You have been freed". God intervened in the life of the crippled woman. Jesus works with God to perform miracles. He then looks up to the father and give Him thanks.

God's empire in action is that Jesus works with God to accomplish various tasks. Jesus re interperates the law for the crippled woman. Deutronomy 5:12-15 : God created the sabbath. Jesus re interperates to tell that the sabbath day was meant to explain real meaning of God's purpose. God is telling us via the scripture that the timing of God is very important. God intercepts our problem at the right time...

Everyone needs healing. The vision of God is that we all stand erect and praise Him. Spiritual power is untying people who are caught up in their bandages. 1 Corinthians 4:20 "Kingdom of God is not in world but in power"

Broody and Sulky: Part 2

So here I am again. Not in the office today. At home was thinking of going early then better sense prevailed and will now reach office at my usual time (which is quite late by any standards). Still broody, still sulky, still cynical, and still contemplating.

Back in Bangalore after a trip home. The trip which has silenced me. Really and literally silenced. Anyhow I was not much of a talker but now it seems that it is one art which I have forgotten. I don't know what to say and speak. The smile along with any conversation is essentially fake and even when I do that its just to fit in. WHY?

The time off was a time for me contemplate, think about how to move forward, get over a failed relationship. The time home did gave plenty of space to brood over various matters. Unfortunately in my quest to seek answers I am left with even more questions.

Relationship, hmmm, what the heck, it was nice, it was cool, it was amazing, I am just thankful for having any. It does not matter to me any more. But I am always game for another one ;) howsoever superficial it maybe. In fact the more the superficial, the better it will be

What disturbs me today is the absence of any particular aim. I think and reflect and ask myself but I find no answer. There is a reason why the school days and college days are reminisced upon as best days in anyones life. Even without realizing we all work toward some aim. We always move forward in those days. After that the stagnation erodes the joy away from life like a termite. I now understand why some choose the drug route of escapism.

You know what, in some post of mine I would list out what I like to do. Right now as one my known observed I am like a aimless wanderer with a question "Why am I living" written on the face. I am not sad. Not at all think that. All I am today is reflective, not sad.

I am a dreamer. In this modern world along with embracing the modern concepts and beliefs (sometimes thoughts way ahead of the country I am living in ;)) somewhere their remains primitive and medieval me inside of me. Believing in super heroes and larger than life warriors. But truly speaking I would rather be not like them. Instead I would rather like to be the leader leading the unsung militia facing the first shots of the enemy. Heehehe the plot from The Patriot.

Truly speaking what I need is to flicker and lighten up myself and others and then die. The emotion that encompasses my thought process is best described by what Neil Young said in one of his songs It's better to burn out than to fade away. Till now my caged soul has been limited with absence of ways and invisible paths to excel. But one day I would. The glory would be mine, even though for a moment, it will be mine dear Sir, yes it will be mine. My Precioussssssss

Broody and Sulky : Part 1

Long time no see !! A typical greeting to a chat buddy pinging you after long time. In the absence of creativity I will use the same to greet the few very stubborn readers of my blog. Those readers who have endured with my highly unskillful writing skills and even more pathetic incoherent thought process. I have an added cliche greeting for you i.e. Hats off to you my friends. Well inspite of all my shortcomings I do tend to update my blog, so the reason for not doing so was that I went home. Yeah home after 1.6 years. Before you even think that may be my parents live in some other country then let me correct you they live here. In the same country of diversity, mob mentality, tolerance, intolerance, a country of a billion which has finally got an individual gold in olympics. For the last one I got to say thank you Mr Bindra.

So here I am today in my office and ironically blogging not working. Strange is my sense of timing. I tend to work when at home in my supposed free time and do all sort of stuff during my working hours. My work timing and my non work timing has got entangled to an extent that each moment I feel I am either working and not free or I am not working and doing nothing. Nevertheless here I am today after a 9 days off from work and it happened as I did not take my laptop with me. Strangely after a trip after home which mind you I needed desperately I am tending more towards being broody, sulky and cynical. WHY?

Went home to Patna (Bihar). If you do not know where that is then Laloo Prasad Yadav. If you still don't know the place I am talking about either you are not an Indian or you have zero general knowledge. In between my old city is not the same any more. I was able to see bikes like pulsar, karizma and even R15. Yeah in Patna where we use to fear that if I take a bike today then one could only speculate and pray that it stays tomorrow. More over I saw some Vishal Mart, twin tower and many new places like that. Then the most shocking and most heartening of all was the markets and even small shops bustling with activity even as late as 11 PM. Yeah 11 PM !! Imagine that happening in Bangalore. Zillion times better than Bangalore. I wish this moral policing would stop and Bangalore could behave as a cosmopolitan should But who am I to wish , I am JASE (Just Another Software Engineer). People (hmmm) I almost got suffocated with number of people I saw on road. They were huge in number, never thought my home town has grown so rapidly. The dark side of development was that moving on roads (if I could call them that) was like moving amidst heaps of trash. This new BJP government in the state I guess would stay for giving people the sense of safety. I guess next time when (or if) they get elected they will really have to do work get elected again.

SMS's Services With A Funny Streak

There is reason why I do not have a high end phone. At least I would like to think that way. The mystery behind my odd behavior of possessing a low cost phone in spite of currently working in a company working in mobile domain got revealed to me today.

There are two basic service of phone which I use. One is the most basic of calling and receiving calls and the other is for receiving and sending messages in text format. For me these two basic service is enough. In fact more than enough. In fact it provides so much entertainment that I am scared that "I" with a high end phone with infinite amount of facilities would become a mobile-o-holic.

But why am I telling you this. No where near doing justice to the title of this post. What to do my mind is like a free bird and a careless wanderer and has started to affect my writing style.

Coming down to the point.

I work in a company which provides a search service. Search anything via web,wap or sms and if the answer is not found in already existing information with us then we find the answer from somewhere and sms it to you.

Yes of course indeed a good service.

Now I know there are two kind of skeptics who are reading this

One who is thinking that I am doing a shameless publicity of my company service. For them I would say "Hey you blind people can't you already see a search box on right top of my blog"

And the other skeptics are people whose mind has already imagining thing. Yeah you, you dirty minded dog who is thinking that well I should ask them Angelina Jolie's stats, or when does Priyanka Chopra takes bath (Bath == nudity (got the relation)). Or yeah the favorite where could I get a girl . Truly speaking if somehow you get the answer to this from the service then I would believe it is no less than a God. God...hmmm..would I be wrong If I say then it is even bigger :)

My mind wanders ...Remember !!!

So the thing which I wanted to say is that I keep pushing the system and ask pretty different questions. It achieves dual purpose. One it improves the data our system has and secondly it gives me a sick pleasure of knowing that I am better than the dumb system. At least for now.

Now if an answer is not found in the system then we deliver it to you on the phone by somehow finding it somewhere. Now these unknown answer could be big and you must be knowing that a big message generally gets split into multiple message. Here is one of the message I received for the query of "CAT forms Bangalore". The message was big and it got split into two which created a humor out of its own

15/6/2008: Koramangala Methodist Church (KMC): Speaker: Pastor Grace Methodist Church: Theme: Life in his kingdom

Was unable to get the name of the speaker. Reading was taken from 1 Timothy 1:1-10. And here goes the sermon in 1st person

Paul appreciated timothy and his parents and grandparent of their faith.

1 John 3:1-3: talks about the lavish love for our heavenly father. When God appears we will be like Him.

Scripture talks about various workers working for different amount of time getting the same amount of money as renumeration. The laborers belong to the poorest of the poor. This parable talks about the kingdom of god.

Where is the kingdom of God? When this kingdom will come. We normally believe that this kingdom is up above without any sufferings. New testament has a lot of parables which talk about the kingdom of God. New testament tells that the kingdom of God has come. A place where we obey the will of God. But it also tells that the best is yet to come.

What is life like in God's kingdom. The parables tells a lot about the kingdom. It tells that there is no favoritism in God's kingdom.

Jews disliked gentiles for thinking themselves as favorite to God. But everyone is equal in the sight of God.

God loves all. Irrespective of time or place. his love is for everyone. Some may have accepted Christ at different points in our life, as a child, as a youth, as an old. But in Jesus Christ we have someone who loves us equally. God loves those who come in the morning as well as those who come in the evening.

Thief in the cross asked Jesus to remember him and he accepts him in his kingdom.

Infinite compassion of God. It is so much, we won't be able to measure with our own understanding. In this parable God in His mercy Gave these poor people work ....

Common criticism to church is that to fill various vacancies with the second best candidates. We need to show compassion to other people who need it.

Generosity of God: All these laborers do different amount of work. There is no rank in God's kingdom. Everyone is same in the eyes of God and God gives them liberally and lovingly.

Pastor also raise funds. Some do give liberally and sometimes the generosity could be surprising. The philosophy of work is different in God's kingdom. These workers who came to work can be divided into two groups. One who were under contract and others who were not. In God's kingdom it is the joy of working which is important. Today the money which is abundant and flow has also affected the church. There is no joy of working instead we are working for thw money. In the kingdom of God we work for the joy. Its a joy to do his ministry

The Wreck : Rabindranath Tagore



I avoid picking up great writers. Avoid picking up writers of critical acclaim. I read quite often though not of late. But still I do believe I do have a good appetite for books (or I use to have).

There is a reason behind not picking up writers of such calibre.

The reason is simple. I do not understand them. I am unable to see the beauty which many a million people might have been able to see. Firstly its by default their novels, books, stories will be written in a language unknown to me. The language may be english, still I am unable to make out as their vocabulary is way.... way complex to my liking. Adding to it I don't like referring to dictionary 5 times in a single sentence. Secondly the level of abstraction is too much. Its always, the words written means something else, altogether !!. Above all even if I manage to make myself read such a novel I am left with more of an empty feeling than experiencing the joy associated with the concept of reading.

Nevertheless I thought of giving such reading a shot.

Picked up the novel named "The Wreck" by Rabindranath Tagore . A well known, loved and acclaimed Indian writer. Thought of reading this book and get myself the bragging rights of having read his novel.

Truly speaking it was a big mistake.

Reading this novel bought me back the horrors of reading one Mills and Boon novel I had read long time back. It was simply not meant for me. I do not know why Mills and Boons is very popular among girls and probably will never be able to find out. The similar frustrating feeling came after this novel and I gave up half way. Easy read. Easy flow. But ...but...simply not meant for me or to be sexist...not meant for guys.

This novel was suppose to show the rift between the reformist and progressive Brahamosamaj and traditional conservatism of Hinduism. This is what the back cover of the book says. But I never was able to see it. May be my reading thought process is not so well developed to appreciate and see such things.

So my take would be pick up this novel at your risk. Better if you are a Tagore fan overlook any of my blabbering. On the other hand this novel is suppose to be second best to Gitanjali by the same author.

Told Ya' I am unable to see what millions of others might have been able to see

Although likes of Shania Twain were hogging the lime lite but it seemed she came out of nowhere and floored me with her voice. Hey she was well known singer then but I was hearing her for the first time. I just remember one more thing that she started by saying something sarcastically to the host who introduced her by saying that she had a troubled childhood. Stupid host !! probably he/she hadn't heard her before.

8/6/2008: Koramangala Methodist Church: Speaker: Pastor H Mathew: Theme: Growing from Small to Big: Months Theme: Life in His Kingdom

I have finally realized that it was not the pastor but me. I slept to my hearts content the previous night and found his sermon not so boring. Now I can definitely make peace with the notion that there is something wrong with his delivery. In fact his content is even more appealing.

A small story of a hymn was also mentioned today. "Blessed Assurance" was written by a blind person. What it signifies that even in disability this person was able to see the promise in the Lord.

Another thing worth mentioning is the soulful rendition by Joshua and one lady. Even though I am writing the post after such a long time their voice still rings in my ear.

The reading was taken from Mark 4:26-32

We always desire to grow and rise to greater heights. If we are not growing then we are static, stagnant leading to unhappiness.

In the parable their is an imagery of a seed with the kingdom of God. It talks about the growth of the seed referring to the growth of the kingdom of God. Another parable about wheat refers to the separation in the kingdom of God. Another parable talks about spreading of the kingdom of God.

People came and asked that why do Jesus talk in parables. He replies that kingdom of God is so mysterious that you won't understand it without simplification.

There is a secret growth of the kingdom of God as emphasized in the imagery via seed in the parable. Farmer sows and forgets but the seed grows with the farmer returning at the time of harvest. It is God who brings the fruit for the farmer. Similarly the kingdom grows under the eyes of God

Through intervention, involvement, participation of God something small can be transformed into something big. We may spend our life to achieve something big but we may not succeed due to the absence of God's involvement, as we do not desire his involvement...

In the scripture we see so many lives although being small in stature and grandeur was transformed to heights of greatness, David in old testament is such an example.

In new testament we see that Jesus feeds so many with so little in quantity. When sometimes we think that we are not worthy so much to do the work of God but God has a purpose for us and makes work in different ways.

No one thought that cross is something great questioning the very of a God being crucified. But for others cross is where we get our salvation from. Throughout his life Jesus humbleness was making Him the savior of the world.

We may think that we do not have that much ability, think oneself to be small in various aspects, but God will deliver us from smallness we may feel of. We may be in despair, poverty, hunger, smallness but when Jesus works continuously in our life then He brings great joy, comfort and the potential within us to make us greater in our life. We just need to plant the seed. Unless we sow the seed we won't get fruit. Although it may be a small seed but it will grow using the power within us. Likewise in the fields of family, society, friends, church; we have to sow the seed of God so that it can grow and do miracles. Sometimes we may sow the seed of evil. Satan encourages us in doing so. So we need to be careful and watchful.

God causes seed to grow. We may decide to lead a particular kind of life to achieve greatness but it is quite possible that we might fail. This happens due to our dependence on other things than God. We need to make an effort with God and allow the seed to grow. God works in us to help us grow in the kingdom of God.

Some one said that "Do what you do thoroughly, pray over it heartily and leave the result to God." When we do that God works in our life.

A story widely used to encourage young people. There was an emperor. In the absence of any child he thought of entrusting his kingdom to one among the youths. He called upon every young person in his kingdom. He said that "I will give you all one seed each, take it, plant it and come back after a year". A young man took the seed and went home. He took care of it. As time passed by all those who had taken the seed was confident but not this guy. He was not happy as his plant was not growing. After a year every one who had taken the seed brought their plants to the king's court for judgment. But this guy was sad as his plant had not grown and did not know what to do. His mother then told him to be honest. So he took whatever he had to the king. Every body else seeing his plant made fun of him. King arrived and was happy to see so many well developed plant. He noticed this young man's pot which was empty. On seeing that he exclaimed "Behold this person is your future king" Every one was surprised. The king explained "the seed give to each one you was such that it would have never grown. Everybody except this guy was dishonest and had used their own seed"

God has given us the seed. Many times we struggle to make it grow. We put our own seed to portray that the seed has grown. But we need to grow using the seed which God has given us. But if the seed fails to grow we need to be honest and as God for its purpose. We need to accept the kingdom of God with all honesty and sincerity and then God will take us from smallness to heights of glory.

Grief

Dark topic to my post. Indeed it is. I cannot argue with that. I was reading an interesting booklet (WatchTower). Although I read only a few pages but still it compelled me reproduce some of it over here in my blog.

Grief can effect us in various ways, but for many the overriding feeling is of immense emotional pain. Grief can be intense. Grief can visit in various forms. Nobody is untouched by the concept of grief, so I feel I need not reproduce examples to back my statement. But the question which haunts me is that is it possible to come out of it.

Just as severe physical wounds takes time to heal, so it is with bereavement. Recovering from grief may take months, a few years or even longer. But the acute pain one may feel in the beginning will lessen in time, and life would seem less bleak and meaningless.

Grief is said to be necessary part of healing process and it helps us in learning to adapt to the new situation. It may prove itself to be a necessary emotional release. And every individual grieves differently

Talking, writing, shopping, music, in fact anything could be useful. Just the requirement is to find oneself with the best compatible source of release. Which mind you is not easy.

Somewhere it is written by a pained soul "My soul certainly feels a loathing towards my life. I will give vent to my concern about myself. I will speak in the bitterness of my soul".

Wow what an expression of expressing the desire for the release. I am glad that I came across this meaningful expression which makes me feel its not so bad after all to glorify ones grief in the pursuit of an ever distant peace.

Well I cannot summarize this post or give it a proper conclusion cause I don't know how. I have been disabled by my conflicting thoughts and immense thoughts of nothingness but nonetheless I unashamedly take your leave and leave it to you to make some sense out of this rambling.

Debugging .sh in eclipse using external tools

Lets say X has been using eclipse for a while. He has been working on a project and he is delivering. He has been developing and debugging using an ide called eclipse which has taken him away from the system. Now he feel the need to go closer to the system. He writes build scripts, he makes the project as configurable as possible and makes the project IDE independent and linux/unix friendly. In the process he creates shell scripts. Now with time the codes got enhanced with lesser reliability on IDE. After a while he comes back and find to his amusement well now he is to code and inevitably debug. Now he is in a fix how to debug in eclipse (the concept he is so familiar with) the shell scripts which in turn calls bits and pieces of the rest of the code base(in java). Here is the way out for him.


Create Program in external tool. select sh ,select workspace and set all
the env var in env which are required to run that shell script. Some of the changes which I did was this. These changes are specific to user requirement

and create debug for this port,localhost in remote app debug

After this set break point in your code base using which one can debug.

Debugging remotely on tomcat using eclipse

Debugging was, is and always be one of the most potent tool in the hands of a developer. With most of the development exposed to me is in java. In spite of all my dislike to make it user friendly somehow in the end you have to make a web app out of it. Now if one is lucky then one might be writing code from scratch but most of the time its not the case. With companies following iterative policy of development some time or the other one will have to work on a monstrous code base. Now me being a fan of eclipse IDE will also like to debug on that. But one funny problem may happen in setting up the debugger in eclipse when your java web app is running remotely. In the sense you have your open in eclipse as a project but you run your web app directly from tomcat by making changes in tomcat config (server.xml) file. So debug under such a kind of scenario here are the steps


The steps below is for linux/unix m/c.

To debug the first step is to make sure that tomcat allows debugging:

1) Open your startup.sh

2) Add these two lines in the beginning which specifies debug on port
8000(This port could be different from the port you have exposed in
server.xml for your application)
export JPDA_ADDRESS=8000
export JPDA_TRANSPORT=dt_socket
3) Change the execute line at the end to include jpda start
exec "$PRGDIR"/"$EXECUTABLE" jpda start "$@"

Now start your tomcat. It will now allow debugging.

Allowing debugging is not enough. You should also be able to use the facility which you have allowed. Now there are various tools which could allow us to do it. I use eclipse so here are the steps to debug via eclipse.

1) Goto Run->Open Debug Dialog

2) Single-click the heading "Remote Java Application", then press the new
button (looks like a page with a plus on it).

3) On the dialog that appears, enter a meaningful name (like "<Your_ProjectName>(remote)" for this configuration).

4) From the same dialog, change to the "Source" tab, then click "Add".

5) On the dialog that appears, single-click "Java Project", then click
"OK".

6) On the dialog that appears, click "<Your_ProjectName>" (or check the projects
you wish to import), then click "OK".

7) Now click the "Connect" tab and un check the box marked "Allow termination of remote JVM". Do not check allow termination of remove VM. As each time you terminate the
debugging,the server will also be shutdown which you might not like.

8) Type in localhost (or the host you have mentioned in server.xml )in
Host Text Box

9) Type in 8000 (the port mentioned in tomcat startup.sh) in the Port
TextBox

10) Click "Apply" to save your changes.

11) Click "Debug" to start testing your configuration

12) Add breakpoints in your application

13) Open your browser and work with <Your_Project< until you reach your breakpoint. You should be directed into Eclipse where you will see the line of code with your breakpoint, a list of variables, etc., etc. And then you can gain knowledge about the flow and behavior of the code base

WebService Client over https (Note: https not http) using Eclipse

All those users who have been spoiled by the amazing eclipse (which includes me) will be even more amazed that the scenario described by me has already not been taken care of by eclipse. Well as there is already a plugin for creating the whole code base of web service client by just giving in the url of the concerned web service. But then there is a problem if the web service has been exposed on Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer. In simple words the url is https not http. Given such a scenario the plugin will not be able to generate the client code.

But as lazy I am, I would still like my client code to be auto generated. So here are the steps via which I was able to do it.

Firefox User(other browser user look for ways to get the certificate)
Download Cert Viewer Plus from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1964/
Restart firefox

Go to the url where the web service has been exposed https://www.xxxx/xxxx.asmx
Accept the certificate permanently which the browser will ask for acceptance
Go to Tools -> Certficate Manager. Go to Websites tab
Select your concerned site and export and save to some

Then type in the following command
keytool -import -alias -file

Actually you should go to your jdk.../gre/lib/security folder
For me it was c:/j2sdk1.4.2_16/jre/lib/security
and type in
keytool -import -keystore cacerts -alias -file /

After doing this now you can let the eclipse do the magic for you and create your web service client code base even for those secured services

Well I am learning the art of outsourcing. Right, I am limited to outsourcing my work to my IDE. Oh technology ...Oh technology !! makes a man/woman inherently an out-sourcer so why there is so much hullabaloo over it.

UIMA Hadoop

Wow complex topic to my post. Yeah this is what I have been working on lately. And I have been struggling hard with it. Killing forums for answers which I don't find in the web. Strange but its true there are still some things unavailable in the web. In the process of seeking answers I have somehow managed to educate myself. And whats even more surprising the answer which I was seeking was good enough to be put in their wiki. And what more the content was delivered by me as I somehow managed to get to the solution taking half inputs from all the places. Well why am I writing about this. Its not to brag but because I want to keep the solution for myself and more over because this is probably my first ever contribution of any form to an open source project and for the community. So here is the solution which I posted along with the link to the wiki

Running UIMA Apps on Hadoop

And here goes the original content. Who knows who may edit it.

Problem:

To make a simple UIMA app work over hadoop

Assumption:

     1. You have tested hadoop and you have it running
     2. You have a standalone UIMA app which has been tested

How TO

     1. Let the UIMA be a simple nameAnnotation example which uses a type system nameType for name annotation. Let the descriptors for them be nameAnnotator.xml and nameType.xml.
     2. Write a map and reduce classes within the application along with a job specifier.
     3. Via these map/reduce class you aim to annotate the input value which they are recieving
     4. Create a job jar out of the application.
     5. Run this over hadoop

It will not work. There are several other things which has to be taken care of before

Important Consideration (Before creating/running the Job Jar over hadoop)

     1. The jar file created should shave all the classes, descriptors of the UIMA app along with the map/reduce and job main class
     2. All import in the descriptor declared in UIMA (be it analysis engine, agg engine, cas consumer etc) should be import by name.
     3. Any such activity which involves reading of a resource should be done using the Classloader:
     For eg. Reading an xml source should be done via XMLInputSource in = new XMLInputSource(ClassLoader.getSystemResourceAsStream
    (aeXmlDescriptor),null) i.e. inputstreams should be created using classloader
     4. Last but not the least ResourceManager should be used while producing any analysis engine/ cas consumer etc.

     E.g. ResourceManager rMng=UIMAFramework.newDefaultResourceManager();
rMng.setExtensionClassPath(str, true); //Here str is the path to any of the resources which can be obtained via
//ClassLoader.getSystemResource(aeXmlDescriptor).getPath()
     rMng.setDataPath(str);
     aEngine = UIMAFramework.produceAnalysisEngine
        (aSpecifier,rMng,null);

     This 4th point has to be considered as when we read a xml without using classloader by default it reads from temp task directory i.e..
/tmp/hadoop-root/mapred/local/taskTracker/jobcache/
    job_200806112341_0002/task_200806112341_0002_m_000000_0/
     But all the resources gets unjarred in
/tmp/hadoop-root/mapred/local/taskTracker/jobcache/
        job_200806112341_0002/work
     directory
     So to tell the system to look out for hadoop in the correct directory we have to use Resource Manager. Actually this is required to take care of the the resources which UIMA will try to load because of the imports present in its various descriptors

Mobile Phones. A commodity without which I am unable even to imagine how our fathers and fore-fathers use to live. I have tried imagining and failed to do so. With ever increasing user base sometimes do you have a feeling that unwanted things have started to happen more. Those unwanted phone calls with a bunch of unwanted sms's. Truly speaking some may find it annoying but I don't. Unfortunately the people who send it have a sick sense of humor. Every time they manage to send these sms's and make calls exactly during those time when I don't want it to. Still my patience hasn't given up and I am able look at the bright side i.e. they make me sometime feel important and not so alone.

Wow it seems I am really lonely and desperate!!.

God give these people all the blessings in the world. And thankfully these people don't know want kind of handset I have. Or they do not know how mobile unsavvy I am in spite of currently in a firm which works quite a bit within the mobile domain. I guess this is the only time I am thankful of my blog being not so popular otherwise they would definitely stop calling me after reading this confession of mine.

Moving on have you ever received sms's which tells you to text some thing back to a particular number and you can win something. Or text something to know your future (yeah I agree strange cocktail of modernity (mobile phones) and medieval beliefs(future,horoscope)). Or text something to check compatibility with some other person.

What do I do with these. I think I do what everyone does, I delete them. Good fingering exercise. But this is where I got it wrong. Since these kind of messages never stop and is ever increasing in their diversity. It must be making some business sense. Somebody must be replying. Not only somebody but I guess there are plenty who must be replying. A billion in population, only a few percentage makes huge number.

Why am I telling you this. Because finally I succumbed to their tireless effort. All these days I tried to be elusive but in one moment of weakness I yielded to my curiosity. Even though the results I got will not ensure my loyalty as a user but it certainly was worth every rupee of premium charges spent on the sms. To be more precise, it was hilarious.

Let me just reproduce some of the replies which I got. There was one which asked to sms my name and get to know my future or something like that. And the reply was:

You are witty and creative. You have a positive frame of mind and are very inspiring and big hearted. When your feelings are hurt you withdraw into a shell but your cheerful nature pulls you through. Be careful, lest you lapse into depression and cynicism.


Yes yes...all you who know me can laugh...As I said before it is hilarious ...where do they drive out the results from...If tomorrow I change my name to some Barak Obama will my fortune and character change. I guess it will. May be I should do that. Keep smsing till I get the best character description and change my name. All those who are getting influenced please try and tell me whether it worked or not.

Another one of the service was to sms name of you and your partner and it checks for compatibility. I had to sms two words only (probably a combo of my first name and my love interests first name). But now as dumb I am, I sms'ed 4 words, my full name and the other's full name. (Later on tried the correct way too but the results are not so funny to be disclosed...You know sometimes I am an emotional fool to be not so candid). So the result of the wrong sms was that it found compatibility with my first name 'Rohan' and my last name 'Rai'. So here goes the reply.


Rating 8.5. rohan your love for rai is rated as 8.5 out of 10. Your love is so pure and true that it is most probably used as an example amongst many of your friends. There are non selfish interest involved in any form in you for your partner. Wild Life (The Rat)



One fine day when the rats and us use to live together I had the opportunity to capture them in my camera. Here are the two pics which I managed of the fidgety little creatures. Actually it seems that this guy knew I would click it, so it came out in the open, posed and then it went back the same route via which it had come. Now, when we have sealed all possible routes of its visit, I would not like to say that I miss them a lot but Life's use to be interesting. It was a different creepy feeling altogether when they use to come and fiddle with my feet before scaring me out of the bed at night. Eating half of our things, and of course their taste was quite varied. From the cooked food, to the uncooked ration, or the clothes in our cupboard having equal appetite for both the new and the old. I remember our different failed mission in collaboration with our cook or all on our own to get back our house from them. Well what to say in the country where I live they make their entry in each and every house some how. Since childhood I have seen man against this tiny creature having the ability to instill fear in many a people 100 times their size. So with circumspect we use to live each day but I think we have finally won by sealing all possible entry points. But looking back I sometimes do find those times funny, in fact very funny.

One thing I noticed this day that in the absence of my hair band, open hair makes me look out of the place. Anyways without wasting too many words here is the sermon for this day

Reading: St. Mathew 3:1-12

The gospel contiuously speak about the kingdon of God. What is kingdom of God? It is the dynamic rule of God,.... The kingdom of God does not belong belong to a particular tribe. Mathew speaks 50 times, Mark 14, Luke 39 and John 5 times about the kingdom of God. In the passage John came preaching aout the kingdon of God. Three important things we can carry on in our spiritual life; preaching of John the baptist, life of John the baptist and purpose of john the baptist.

God was faithfull to the people of Israel. He brought them to the promise land. Wilderness is a place of revelation. It is also a place for testing.Gods kingdom is based out of the place of wilderness. We may undergo wilderness i our own life( life of hostility ) but God gives us the promise to show the way from wilderness. We need to turn arouno and face the reality of kingdom of God. John tells us about repentance in order to enter kingdom of God. We often tend to change externally but resist any change internally and in our own private life. John talks about judgement. We like to here goody message which gives comfort to us but in the absence of genuine repentance we are to be judged like everyone else.

A tree that does not bear good fruit is bound to be cut down by the axe and thrown to fire. We as Christians are the tree and via the axe (a symbol of authority) , will be judged for the absence of fruit. John the baptist dressed peculiarly which denoted his poverty and was dependent on God in his wilderness. He ate and dress within the things which were available to him. But even in poverty he was committed towards God's purpose. We spend so much time towards improving our lifestyle that its desire gets closer towards greed leading to gluttony. It is important for us to realize that we are God's people and thus should be content with what God has given to us.

John 1:19-23: People are confused who is He. He then replies that he is not Christ, Elijah or any prophet. He replies that he is the voice of the wilderness who comes to prepare the way of the Lord. Who are we? How we define our own identity? Many people are caught in bothering about what are others saying about them. Our identity should come from the relationship we have with Lord Jesus. Pupose of John which he had in his life was clear to him that he had come to prepare the way of the Lord. Likewise we should also prepare the way of the Lord by our deeds, our bearings,....We should prepare the way for the second coming of Jesus. We should move out of the way, lower the resistance and allow God to work in us. John 3:30. He says that "He must increase but I must decrease". That is the way we make the way for the kingdom of God for its coming. We should be humble to allow Lord to prosper in our life . Mathew 11:11 He who is humble is greater

After working my ass off for a few minutes with google, I was finally able to get hold of the lyrics of this song. Strange is the level of frustration when I don't get the required result in a single search. I guess as a google user I am becoming more demanding. A typical peppy number from 80's having no out of the box quality to move you. But it has the simplicity and compatibility with your ears because of the easy flow of its tune which can hook you on. The same goes for its lyrics. Somewhere I read that Asha Bhosle was 50 years old when she gave her voice to this song for a 18 year old girl (Haven't verified the fact though). Assuming this to be true, it makes me appreciate the song even more. Was not successful in obtaining its video from youtube but vtap.com did give me something to cheer
